Part II My Favorite Quotation

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

My son who is on his second year in High School education happily shared to us during dinner (a day after reading “My Favorite Quotation” topic) of his favorite quote;

“ Don’t talk to the driver while the bus is in Motion”.

“Don’t extend any part of your body outside the bus”.

Funny isn’t it? So I just told him, next time ride a jeepney (a mode of public transportation here in the Philippines) when going to your school.

We are a family with a very happy disposition in life. We could almost turn any situation into a funny or comedy affair. Just like when you ask for soy sauce, everybody will repeat the command until it comes back to you. Then we would all be laughing.

When my wife asks for something, the same things happen. It looks like our home is place in a mountain and you would always hear echoes.

Then another butted in,” Keep your feet off the Grass”. “Stop going to parks, will you?”

“No I.D. – No entry”, another one would add.

Can’t wait to have another Dinner with them when this topic crops up again.

New Anti-Christian Movie Planned

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

Subject: New Anti-Christian Movie Planned

Please, read the Snopes article about this movie for children, GOLDEN COMPASS!!!

This refers to a children’s movie coming out in December.

I thought you might find the following article from snopes.com interesting:

http://snopes. com/politics/ religion/ compass.asp

Just received this email from one of our yahoo e-group member (Thanks Tina). And I thought sharing this to all of you because I remember a story told to us once by Ate Lulu during our C.C.D. days.(Please read the rest of the story here http://www.fatherlyours.com

There are two friends who are exactly opposite of one another. A shade of opposite poles attract. Let us name them Juan and Pedro.

Juan is as very religious man. Doing all what a true Christian is supposed to do. While Pedro doesn’t believe in God and doing all kinds of things that is written against the bible.

Their healthy discussion of who is right boiled down to an agreement or a wager. The price their “Soul.”

According to Ate Lulu, there would always be two possibilities in every situation. It is either you are right or wrong.

So to make the story short, they both died at the same time.

Possibility No. 1 - There is God.

Naturally Juan was warmly received By St. Peter and showed him the gateway to heaven. While Pedro was equally “warmly” received by Satan. His tribe increased.

Possibility No. 2 - God didn’t exist

Pedro is jumping with joy and had proven to Juan that he is right. But they will have no place to go to. They were left wandering in empty space. His joy is short lived. If there is no heaven then there is no hell.

So whose judgment is right after all. Juan’s belief place him in a win-win situation while Pedro is in a no win situation(”tabla-talo in tagalog”) .

Now tell me, are you  a JUAN or a PEDRO.

C.C.D. (Confraternity of Christian Doctrine)

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

In my Elementary and High School days, I am a member of C.C.D.(Confraternity Of Christian Doctrine) of Sta. Cruz Church. We are divided into different groups with different function. We hold our Sunday mass under the Chapel adjacent to the Church.

*1.fisherman group-assigned to fetch and bring home safely the children in their area of responsibility.

I forgot the name of the other group so I’ll just name them by their function.

*2 Refreshment Team- assigned to prepare and distribute the food after the mass. Consist of Milk (sometimes chocolate) and galletas (a kind of biscuit).

*3.Preacher - Our group is to interpret the gospel and create a drama situation so that the children could understand the gospel in laymen’s term. Just before our officiating Priest will deliver his sermon.

*4.Choral Group - Here I learned to play the guitar. Playing mostly mass based songs. We performed every Sunday (morning) in the side Alter then during Mass at the Chapel for these little children.

Our Parish Priest then is Father Paul Crainz then Father Getty. Miss Caballero (then replaced by Ate Lulu) is our Social Services Head and our Coordinator. Ate Charito is our Choir Master and Voice Teacher (I’m not a good singer that is why I had to learn how to play the Guitar. Get that!).

Here I learned the true meaning of our Bible. We will discuss and brainstorm every Saturday what is the best to way to interpret the Gospel. This will be used in the next day mass. Years after years; that is our routine. It gave me vast knowledge in understanding people. I also learned the true meaning of patience, hard work, dedication, and forgiveness due to the example shown to us by the above-mentioned name. Those people genuinely showed their love and care. They honed our skills and developed us to be productive in our own little way. They gave us confidence in dealing with other people. We became man for others. To do volunteer work unselfishly without expecting or thinking of return of favor. Our trips to Seminary or attending a” Retreat” is a welcome news for us. Not counting when December comes and when they would surprised us with our individual gifts.

Of course there are petty quarrels but those made our bonding stronger. Those things have taught us to so resolve our differences by listening to one another and always use the “WE” instead mo “I”. This part of my life that I would re-lived over and over again.

This is where I met my lovely sweetheart who became my wife Evelyn.

Prior to becoming an active member, I would always run or hide whenever I see Volunteer or the Fisherman group looking for children. Learning the free snacks being served after the mass, I was motivated to try. That first try had me hook in going even not being fetch or would excitedly wait for Sundays to come. Suddenly I find myself with a lot of new friends and a lot of new thing to learn. I just don’t know if this organization still exists up to this time.

If there is one in your locality, I would suggest for you to encourage your children to join.  It will  also helped them a lot in developing their  self esteem  and their  personality.

My Favorite Quotations

Friday, October 26th, 2007

Sorry if I failed to acknowledge the Author. Just in case you know who the author was, kindly inform me for proper acknowledgment.

When my children are growing up,I must have said this a hundred times because if I would say the opening words such as ” I shall…”they would complete the remaining words to complete the quotation.

When they can’t understand why I will give my P 250.00 pesos to somebody who would come into our home when my remaining money is only P 500.00

“I shall past this way but once, any good that I can say and do, or any kindness that I can show, Let me do it now. For I shall never pass this way again”.

When they want something but they didn’t needed it.

“Happiness is not measured by the things that you(material things) have but by enjoying the things that you have.

When they encountered problems and wish to ask for our advised.

“In everything you say and Do, Put God First and He will reward you and crown your effort with and Success”.

There are a few more but for now, this is all I can recall. Maybe due to old age…

My Father (Concluding Part)

Family Picture

Remember Tancho Teque pomade (I hope I got the brand name right)? When you put it in your hair you can mold your hair in any style and it will follow. He wears it in his hair. Before he sleeps he would wrapped his pillow with newspaper so that it will not get dirty.

Our casserole is so shiny white as if it was not being used even though we are using gas powered stove. You have to pump air in the gas tank to make it work. It is double burner made of metal. He would remove each part and would clean it a few hours after using. You better keep it that way when he arrives because that would make him happy.

(Fast forward, year 1975)

After graduating from Manila High School, I became a working student to support my studies. I worked for a hardware store in Rotonda Pasay City. One time I had to ask one customer for his Identification card because it was needed in the invoice. I saw his surname as “Lu”. So I casually told him that we have the same surname. He wanted to know my father’s name. Upon mentioning my father’s name I was surprised that he knows my mother’s name including mine. He reminds me that we used to go to his warehouse of shoes every December. My father facilitated for his trip here from China according to him. That he owe a lot to my father. He wanted to help us and to talk to my mother. Yes, now I remember. That was in the 60’s. My father never gets something from him in return. He always insists on paying for everything that we get. That is what you can call as Integrity in the highest order. I was both happy and sad. Here is a man whom he had helped but didn’t show up when we needed him. This will be another story.

My Father (part 1)

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

Since All Saint’s Day is fast approaching, let me discuss how I remember my father when he was still alive. That was almost four decades ago.

My father is Pure Chinese national from Amoy China. His name is Lu Puat Kuy in Chinese and Valentin Lu in his immigration paper. As all typical Chinese, he doesn’t want anybody in the family still in bed when the sun rises.

Whew…

October 22, 2007
After a few months of planning whether to continue this project of mine of putting up a website or not, here it is. Just like having a new baby, you can’t describe the feeling.
Now I realize that it is not easy to set up something like this. You have to learn so many things in a short possible time.
Only last Thursday, while browsing another site, I saw a topic posted by “hacksider” entitled “Free webhosting – Batch 2”. I immediately applied for one slot. By Friday got a message informing me of the details of my FREE WEB Hosting. Saturday and Sunday had me busy conceptualizing the design and content.
With a few help from my daughter (when I can’t execute some command) I was able to put up this site.
Monday morning I have to pay for this domain name. This Monday evening, This site is on air so to speak. http://www.fatherlyours.com
Although not as flashy as it should be, I am happy with what I have done. As what I had said, this will be a work in progress. The development of this website will also be my development as a person, as a communicator, as friend, as a father, as a blogger…
