You’ll Start Exercising Today after reading this….
When you work up a sweat on the treadmill or stationary bike, it sparks the creation of new blood vessels in your heart. Essentially, if any part of your heart is damaged, exercise helps to heal it. No pills required. That is the stunning finding from researchers at Leipzig University in Germany. The Associated Press reports that Dr. Robert Hollriegel determined in a small study of just 37 people that when those who had serious heart failure rode a bike for up to 30 minutes a day for four months, new stem cells were produced in their bones. In addition, they had more small blood vessels in their muscles. A control group of people who did not exercise had no change in their vessels or muscles. Heart failure tends to strike those in their 70s and beyond, and it is so debilitating that patients can only walk a few steps before stopping to rest. Amazingly, doctors think that even these patients will benefit from light exercise, such as walking or cycling. In fact, they advise such patients to exercise to the point of breathlessness once a day.
How does exercise create new blood vessels in the heart? When we engage in physical activity, the heart’s arteries and muscles are strained and send 10 times the normal amount of blood to the muscles being used. Stem cells are then dispatched to relieve this stress, and it appears they repair the damaged parts. Keep exercising and those same stem cells help the body adapt to the stress by building new blood vessels and strengthening muscles. Because there are no drugs that can produce new stem cells, exercise may be the only method for some people to rebuild and repair their damaged hearts, reports AP.
There’s just one catch: To maintain all these heart-healthy benefits, you must exercise regularly. The research was presented at a meeting of the European Society of Cardiology.
