Laus Deo

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

One detail that is never mentioned is that in D.C. there can never be a building of greater height than the Washington Monument.

With all the uproar about removing the ten commandments, etc, this is worth a moment or two of your time. I was not aware of this amazing historical information.

On the aluminum cap, atop the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., are displayed two words: Laus Deo.

No one can see these words. In fact, most visitors to the monument are totally unaware they are even there and for that matter, probably couldn’t care less. Once you know Laus Deo’s history, you will want to share this with everyone you know. These words have been there for many years; they are 555 feet, 5.125 inches high, perched atop the monument, facing skyward to the Father of our nation, overlooking the 69 square miles which comprise the District of Columbia, capital of the United States of America.

Laus Deo! Two seemingly insignificant, unnoticed words. Out of sight and, one might think, out of mind, but very meaningfully placed at the highest point over what is the most powerful city in the most successful nation in the world.

So, what do those two words, in Latin, composed of just four syllables and only seven letters, possibly mean? Very simply, they say “Praise be to God!”

Though construction of this giant obelisk began in 1848, when James Polk was President of the United States, it was not until 1888 that the monument was inaugurated and opened to the public. It took twenty-five years to finally cap the memorial with a tribute to the Father of our nation, Laus Deo. “Praise be to God!”
From atop this magnificent granite and marble structure, visitors may take in the beautiful panoramic view of the city with its division into four major segments. From that vantage point, one can also easily see the original plan of the designer,Pierre Charles l’Enfant ..a perfect cross imposed upon the landscape, with the White House to the north, the Jefferson Memorial is to the south, the Capitol to the east and the Lincoln Memorial to the west. A cross you ask? Why a cross? What about separation of church and state? Yes, a cross; separation of church and state was not, is not, in the Constitution. So, read on. How interesting and, no doubt, intended to carry a profound meaning for those who bother to notice. Praise be to God! Within the monument itself are 898 steps and 50 landings. As one climbs the steps and pauses at the landings the memorial stones share a message. On the 12th Landing is a prayer offered by the City of Baltimore; on the 20th is a memorial presented by some Chinese Christians; on the 24th a presentation made by Sunday School children from New York and Philadelphia quoting Proverbs 10:7, Luke 18:16 and Proverbs 22:6. Praise be to God! When the cornerstone of the Washington Monument was laid on July 4th, 1848, deposited within it were many items including the Holy Bible presented by the Bible Society. Praise be to God! Such was the discipline, the moral direction, and the spiritual mood given by the founder and first President of our unique democracy, “One Nation, Under God.” I am awed by Washington’s prayer for America. Have you ever read it? Well, now is your unique opportunity, so read on!

“Almighty God; We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United States at large. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”

Laus Deo!

When one stops to observe the inscriptions found in public places all over our nation’s capitol, he or she will easily find the signature of God, as it is unmistakably inscribed everywhere you look. You may forget the width and height of “Laus Deo”, its location, or the architects but no one who reads this will be able to forget its meaning, or these words: “Unless the Lord builds the house its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.”

(Psalm 127: 1)
It is hoped you will send this to every child you know; to every sister, brother, father, mother or friend. They will not find offense, because you have given them a lesson in history that they probably never learned in school. With that, be not ashamed, or afraid, but have pity on those who will never see this because someone failed to send it on.

Laus Deo

“Fisher, Chess Genius, dies in Iceland; 64”

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

Bobby Fisher

The Philippine Daily Inquirer of today’s (01/19/2007) edition as one of top news story. He is my idol.
I religiously followed his championship game against Boris Spassky during their 1972 encounter at Reykjavik He wrestled the world title here dubbed as the match of the century. I would cut every (moves) games of their duel that got printed in the newspaper.

I can’t remember now whether I am in my first year or second year high school when I came about a group of schoolmates playing Chess in our school quadrangle.

I got interested and ask one of them to teach me the rudiments of the game. But one classmate of mine told me pointblank that no matter what I do I could never win against him.
Oh! Boy, what a challenge he gave me. I love challenges, so as the story goes I took the challenge but I have one problem, I have no chess set to play with.

(Larry hope your reading this) A classmate of mine whose hands are good at drawing (he could even make a komiks version in a sheet of paper) uses a bottle crown (tansan) of soft drinks as chess pieces and Manila folder as chessboard. Genius isn’t it?

Another problem, nobody among my friends knows this game. I was even the one who introduced this game to them.

Then one day, a friend of my friend drop by while we were playing chess in a street corner, and ask me if I could teach him some karate fundamentals? He learned from my friend that we are being taught karate in Hong Sing Karate Club (link). His Father wouldn’t allow him to study karate because it would ruin his hands. His father had enrolled him in a piano lesson.

Despite clear explanation that we could not teach him, he gave an offer we could not refuse, they have an sporting goods (store) in Gonzalo Puyat St. (previously named Raon St.) and he could lend us not only chess set, chess clock and even chess books.
What do you know, that is the first lesson I learned about corruption?

Not before long, I had learned and memorize a lot of opening moves, the importance of middle game and the killer end moves. I even joined our Barangay Chess competition ending second to a member of DeLa Salle School Chess team. He can even play with somebody with a handicapped, playing blindfolded and be able to win.

No I didn’t became a grandmaster, all I want is to prove something that we could do everything in our life if we put our focus on it.

As for my classmates who gave me the challenge, I am thankful for him for my learning became fast and easy. Did I win against him? Of course! Without a sweet mind you.

And to my friend who wanted to learn the fundamentals of karate, we joined him in his piano lesson as his audience with free snacks to boot.

As to my idol, he gave chess the world-class attention similar to what Muhammad Ali had done to boxing.

Excerpt from Wikipedia:

“Robert James “Bobby” Fischer (March 9, 1943January 17, 2008) was an American-born chess Grandmaster, an Icelandic citizen at the time of his death, who became famous as a teenager for his chess-playing ability. In 1972, he became the first, and thus far only, American to win the official World Chess Championship, defeating defending champion Boris Spassky. The match was widely publicized as a Cold War battle because it pitted a single American against the Soviet system. He is often referred to as a candidate for the greatest chess player of all time.” May He rest in piece.

Call out My Name….Peace

 CALL OUT MY NAME

 WRITTEN BY H. MCCLEMONS

Ginger Mcclemons is more than happy to share her poem and there are no infringements attached to it! Enjoy!

Here I am…imprisoned,

my companion the stench of death.

Dying men call out my name

with their last dying breath.

Yet, my name’s banned from lips

still wet with vicious lies.

In the name of freedom he has said

yet, naught but his disguise.

A monster of remorseless cruelty,

my captor lust for blood.

With heart of stone, he’s blind with greed,

while his soldiers die in mud.

And, too many years I’ve suffered

from the fierceness of his rage,

as their blood rains down upon me

in the darkness of my cage.

So, pray for me…I beg of you.

Pray for my desperate release.

Gather yourselves, let your voices ROAR!

Call out my name…

It’s PEACE.

One-Dollar Moral Crusade Against Graft and Corruption

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Dr. Chua is a retired cardiovascular surgeon,  FEUDNRSM cl’62 hails from Cebu, mover , shaker of  Phils.crusade. Spends time between US & Cebu doing free clinics. Pls/pass article to as many Filipinos you know..

Subject: One-Dollar Moral Crusade Against Graft and Corruption

One-Dollar Moral Crusade Against  Graft and Corruption

Philip S. Chua, MD, FACS, FPCS*
Chairman, Filipino United Network ( USA )

How would you like to launch a historical fight against graft
and corruption in the Philippines and “buy” back morality in our
government — all for just One Dollar?

You and I have always abhorred the corruption among our
government officials in the Philippines , from top to bottom, and
deplored the sad state of our country, where more than 70%
of our of our people wallow in massive poverty. While the issue
is a complex one, the most obvious etiology of this shameful
malady is the overwhelming graft and corruption among our amoral and decadent government leaders.

Would you be willing to invest a dollar — yes, one single
US dollar — in the fight against graft and corruption in the Philippines ?

Leading us in this battle is a man of God, the Reverend Father
“Among Ed” Panlilio, the newly elected “Miracle” Governor of Pampanga, a man of dignity and integrity.

What happened in that province is amazingly unbelievable.
A humble priest, without political experience, without a bank account,
without a political machinery, beating two “unbeatable” seasoned,
well-funded, and powerful political giants. “Impossible, ” said the political gurus when “Among Ed” first started his crusade. But the Greater Power above obviously had a grander plan for “Among Ed,” and proved the pundits wrong. Suddenly, there was hope for the Philippines .

Armed with his unblemished character, moral ascendancy, love
of country, and a strong commitment to honesty and transparency in
government, “Among Ed” handily won the election, in spite of widespread vote-buying and rampant cheating. It was evident that a visionary leader with integrity can truly inspire and bring out the best in the Filipino.

The billions of “missing” revenues from the Lahar collection under the past administrations, which Governor Panlilio has discovered since he assumed office June 30, 2007, is only the tip of the iceberg of the  invasive cancer of graft and corruption afflicting every level of government in the entire country.

Unfortunately, an honest man makes crooks and villains nervous and uncomfortable, so there is now a move to eliminate “Among Ed, or oust him thru a Recall, courtesy of his enemies, including the majority of the town mayors who have lost their personal cut from the Lahar collection and other government projects., since Governor Panlilio took over.

One can easily imagine what he, as a man of God, of honesty and decency, of principle and genuine love of country, can do when elected President of the Philippines . A dream, yes. A tall order, definitely. An impossible task? No, not with the Divine Providence, you, and people power on his side!

Governor Panlilio has adopted Gawad Kalinga as the pillar of
his vision for Pampanga and the nation. His crusade is gaining speed
and momentum, and like Tony Meloto’s GK, it will soon be unstoppable. Two giant national religious groups are now supporting “Among Ed.” Filipinos around the world are rejoicing and rallying behind him. And we want you to be a part of this exciting historical transformation.

Come fly with Governor Panlilio in this moral crusade. Our country and our neglected poor need heroes like you in our battle for morality in government, for justice and dignity for our people. This is, indeed, a revolution. Not a revolution of arms where blood will be shed, but a revolution of ideals and of principle, where dreams and vision, sweat and tears shall bathe the nation clean.

All this crusade needs is your personal commitment and moral
support for “Among Ed,” an investment for the future of the Philippines . Let’s not miss this opportunity. Let’s use our power to help change our country for the better. The Reverend “Among Ed” Panlilio is heaven-sent and is clearly the hope for our ailing nation.

Please make your check for one dollar, or whatever amount you wish,
payable to:  FUND FOR HOPE, and mail it to: 1830 Mirmar Road, Munster,  Indiana, 46321, USA, or  to Buenaventura Condominium, 62 E. Osmena St., Guadalupe, Cebu City, 6000, Philippines. Kindly include your full name and email address for our Historical Archive. This will be the best one-dollar investment you’ll ever make.

Join the revolution, help our country and our people, and leave a proud and lasting legacy for our children and the future generations to cherish with honor and dignity.

May God bless you and your loved ones! God bless the Philippines !

Class Action Settlement!

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

It is a CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT - TO: VISA, MASTERCARD & DINERS CLUB CREDIT CARD HOLDERS….

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit ( In re Currency Conversion Fee Antitrust Litigation, MDL 1409) challenge how the price of credit and debit/ATM card foreign transactions was set and disclosed.  Credit holders, this is what I love with the justice system in America -  brilliant lawyers litigating for ignorant capitalist consumers.
The settlement includes certain agreements relating to disclosures on billing statements and other documents about foreign transaction pricing (including foreign transaction fees)- between February 1, 1996 and November 8, 2006.  The defendants have agreed a settlement fund of $336 million to pay valid claims, attorneys’ fees and expenses.  The plaintiffs also ask for up to $350,000 in service awards.

The deadline for refund claim is May 30, 2008.  For questions, go to http://www.ccfsettlement.com or call 1-800-945-9890

From Tina’s Inbox- Words to Live By

Make up-Manang Celine
Winter Days of My Life……

The other day a young person asked me how I felt about being old.
I was taken aback, for I do not think of myself as old. Upon
seeing my reaction, she was immediately embarrassed, but I
explained that it was an interesting question, and I would ponder
it, and let her know.

Old Age, I decided…is a gift. I am now, probably for the first
time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my
body! I sometime despair over my body, the wrinkles, the baggy
eyes, and the sagging butt. And often I am taken aback by that old
person that lives in my mirror (who looks like my mother!), but I
don’t agonize over those things for long. I would never trade my
amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray
hair or a flatter belly. As I’ve aged, I’ve become more kind to
myself, and less critical of myself. I’ve become my own friend. I
don’t chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making
my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn’t need,
but looks so avante garde on my patio. I am entitled to a treat,
to be messy, to be extravagant.

I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon;
before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.
Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer
until 4 AM and sleep until noon ?
I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60&70’s,
and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love … I
will.
I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a
bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I
choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set.
They, too, will get old. I know I am sometimes forgetful.
But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten.
And I eventually remember the important things.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart
not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or
even when somebody’s beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken
hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion.
A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know
the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning
gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep
grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have
died before their hair could turn silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about
what other people think. I don’t question myself anymore. I’ve
even earned the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free.
I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever,
but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what
could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat
dessert every single day. (If I feel like it)

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about
what other people think. I don’t question myself anymore. I’ve
even earned the right to be wrong.

Discover the 90/10 Principle!

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

Discover the 90/10 Principle…….

It will change your life (at least the way you react to situations).

What is this principle?
10% of life is made up of what happens to you; 90% is decided by how you react.
What does this mean? We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us. We cannot stop the car  from breaking down; the plane being late in arriving, which throws our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic.  We have no control over this 10%.
The other 90% is different. You determine the other 90%. How?..by your reaction.  You cannot control a red light., but YOU can control how you react.
Let’s use an example:
You are eating breakfast with your family. Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee on your business shirt. You have no control over what just happened. What happens next will be determined by how you react. You curse. You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over. She breaks down in tears. After scolding her, you turn to your spouse and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. A short verbal battle follows. You storm upstairs and change your shirt. Back downstairs, you
find your daughter has been too busy crying tofinish breakfast and get ready for school. She misses the bus. Your spouse must leave immediately for work. You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school. Because you are late, you drive 110 km/h in a  80 km/hr speed limit.  After a 15-minute delay and throwing $300 & some demerit points (traffic fine) away, you arrive at school.  Your daughter run into the building without  saying goodbye. You arrive at the office 20 minutes late, because of how you reacted in the morning. Why did you have a bad day?
A) Did the coffee cause it?
B) Did your daughter cause it?
C) Did the policeman cause it?
D) Did you cause it?
The answer is obviously D. You had no control over what happened with the coffee. How you reacted in those 5 seconds is what caused your bad day.
Here is what could have and should have happened….
Coffee splashes over you. Your daughter is about to cry. You gently say,
“It’s ok honey, you just need to be more careful next time”. Grabbing a towel you rush upstairs. After grabbing a new shirt and your briefcase, you come back down in time to look through the window and see your child getting on the bus. She turns and waves. You and your spouse kiss before you go to work. You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff. Your boss comments on how good the day you are having.
Notice the difference? Two different scenarios. Both started the same way. Both ended differently. Why? Because of how you REACTED . You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens. The other 90% was determined by your reaction. Here are some ways to apply the 90/10 principle:
If someone says something negative about you, don’t be a sponge. Let the attack roll off like water on glass. You don’t have to let the negative comment affect you.  React properly and it will not ruin your day. A wrong reaction could result in losing a friend, being fired, getting stressed out, etc. How do you react if someone cuts you off in traffic?  Do you lose your temper? Pound on the steering wheel and hurt your own fingers? Do you curse? Does your blood pressure rocket? Do you try and bump them? WHO CARES if you arrive ten seconds later at work?  Why let the cars ruin your drive? Remember the 90/10 principle, and do not worry about it.
The plane is late; it is going to mangle your schedule for the day. Why take out your frustration on the flight attendant? She has no control over what is going on. Use your time to study, get to know the other passengers. Why get stressed out? It will just make things worse.
Now you know the 90-10 principle. Apply it and you will be amazed at the
results. You will lose nothing if you try it.
The 90-10 principle is incredible. It seems simple common-sense but very few apply this principle! The result? Millions of people are suffering from undeserved stress, court trials, problems and heartaches. They never seem to be a success in life. Bad days follow bad days. Terrible things seem to be constantly happening. There is constant stress, lack of joy, and broken relationships. Worry consumes time. Anger breaks friendships and life seems dreary and is not enjoyed to the fullest. Friends are lost. Life is a bore and often seems cruel. Does this describe you? If so, do not be discouraged. You can be different! Understand and apply the 90/10 principle. It will change your life!
