Death in the City

cemetery

Death comes like a thief in the night. Just like a flick of a finger, alive now - gone tomorrow. This is not about the book written by Francis A. Schaeffer with the same title- “Death in the City”.

This is about how dying is more expensive than living. Death in the City is really expensive.

If you are lucky enough to be brought to an ICU of a hospital in an emergency situation, it would cost you P 20,000.00 per day. Not included were the Professional fees of the Doctors that will attend to you. This I learned last Friday July 4, 2008.

My mother-in-law complained of headache and dizziness last Friday afternoon. After my wife tried to give her a little comfort by giving her white flower and massaging her forehead her blood pressure was checked. It was high so we decided to bring her to the nearest hospital. It took a few more precious minutes when the Doctor told us that we should transfer her to FEU Hospital because they lack the necessary apparatus to be used on her.

By time we arrive in the said hospital my mother-in-law fall asleep and goes into coma. After the entire test has been done to her the Doctor told us the truths that in her condition the chances of survival is less that 50 % even if two operations could be performed. She is now 77 years old. Aneurism is the culprit and there are blood clots in her brain.

All her children working and living abroad were informed of the status of their mother. They accepted the sad fact. They all decided to come home and shifted the effort in the preparation of her demise. To make her death as comfortable as she can be despite all those life saving machine attached to her. Monday afternoon at about 2:45 pm the Doctor declared her as dead.

It is a good thing that 3 years ago a memorial plan was bought as an investment. It only cost P 50,000.00 then but purchasing the same plan now would cost P 100,000.00. We just call their hotline number informing them that we would use the plan we purchased. They did everything professionally that helps lighten up the burden the grieving relatives are suffering at that moment.

A memorial lot was purchased almost 9 years ago for the price of P40, 000.00. The going rate now as I have learned from the internet sites that are selling their lots is from P 250,000.00 to P 350,000.00.

Before my mother-in-law died she always told us that she doesn’t want to face long suffering before dying just like what my father-in-law endured. She got her wish.

This tragic incident of losing a love one created more awareness in our family that preparing for your dying is more practical and economical now than buying or purchasing later when the need arise.

This is a personal experience of having a love one face death in the city.
